Thanks for taking the time to apply to become a member of the Students’ Assembly on Electoral Reform. We think this is a pretty special opportunity and we know it will take a special commitment from the 103 students who are selected to participate. If you’re selected, you will be asked to spend four days with 102 other Ontario students learning about the province’s electoral system and figuring out whether it might be improved.

Please complete the application below. Once complete, click on the submit button to send us the form. You will receive an email confirming that we have received your application within twenty-four hours.

Several of the questions will require some time and care to complete. We suggest that you review these questions and write your responses in another application like Microsoft Word. Once complete and saved on your computer, you can copy and paste the text into the appropriate box.

Who we’re looking for:
We want young people who care about the future of Ontario. You should be interested in current affairs and public issues, but you don’t need to be a political expert. After all, we want a wide cross-section of young people with a wide range of interests and ideas. It’s important to us that we try to represent the diversity of experiences and backgrounds of Ontario’s youth.

Who’s eligible to participate:
Participants must be between the ages of 14 and 18, currently reside in Ontario and have spent a minimum of one year living in the province.

It’s important to know that working language of the conference is English. We regret that we cannot guarantee simultaneous translation to participants. We do, however, endeavor to make many of our printed materials available in French and a French-speaking facilitator will be present to work with francophone students at the conference.

If you are selected, you must be able to attend the full Students’ Assembly program, beginning November 15th and concluding November 19th. There can be no exceptions and we ask that you please confirm your ability to participate with your teachers, parents and/or guardians before applying.

The selection process:
Hopefully we will be able to select one representative from every riding. At the very least, there will be multiple representatives from every region.

We will be selecting 51 boys and 52 girls as members of the Students’ Assembly.
(Sorry guys, women make up 52.2% of the population in Ontario. That’s just how it goes.)

All applications are reviewed and if they satisfy our criteria, will be entered in a draw for their riding.

All applicants will be notified of our decision on October 24th 2006.

The Students’ Assembly on Electoral Reform is a parallel process designed to complement the work of the Ontario Citizens’ Assembly. It offers young Ontarians, ages 14-18, the chance to learn about the inner workings of the province’s electoral system and to be part  of  a  history-making process  that   will
help shape Ontario’s political future. Students can participate in their schools through our Classroom Assembly program or by applying to become a member of the Students’ Assembly and attending our week-long conference. | More...

We're working hard to create a remarkable program. If you've got ideas that you'd like to contribute, a pot of coffee you'd like to share, or you simply want to get your hands on more information about this project, then please get in touch.
