In mid-October we received nearly five hundred applications and selected one student from every riding in the province to become a member of The Students' Assembly on Electoral Reform. We were looking for energetic young people, between the ages of 14 and 18, who care about the future of the province and who wanted the chance to work with others to learn about Ontario's electoral system. Ultimately 103 young Ontarians gather November 15-19th in Huntsville and decided to recommend to the Citizens' Assembly that they propose a new, more proportional electoral system for Ontario.

We've created a package of materials that allows your teacher to run a compressed version of our conference in your classroom. We originally scheduled for these materials to be used between November 13th and December 15th, 2006. During that time high schools across Ontario hosted three and five day 'Classroom Assemblies'. But it's not too late!

We're extending the program to give more schools to have the chance to participate in this program. If your school completes its Classroom Assembly by January 22nd, then your results will be a part of our presentation to the Citizen's Assembly on February 17th. You can also register to complete the program at any time before May 15th, 2007 and still have your results posted on the Students' Assembly website before the Citizens' Assembly makes it's recommendation to the Ontario government at the end of May.

Our classroom materials will help you to cover off most of the material from the Students' Assembly and have the chance to cast your vote for the electoral system that you think best represents your values and serves the interests of Ontarians. If you'd like your teacher to register your school to participate and run our program in your class, tell them to check out this website. They'll find everything they need to know here.

We've developed some own materials that we hope will help explain what can sometimes be a complicated topic. Happily, our friends at the Citizens' Assembly got the head start and have also posted some great materials. Visit their Bookshelf, or read along with the Citizens' Assembly  as  they  move  through  their
process. Watch their flash video that explains different electoral systems. Or check out the work by good people at IDEA, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance. They report on news from elections around the world and have published a very helpful hand guide to different electoral systems.

The Students’ Assembly on Electoral Reform is a parallel process designed to complement the work of the Ontario Citizens’ Assembly. It offers young Ontarians, ages 14-18, the chance to learn about the inner workings of the province’s electoral system and to be part  of  a  history-making process  that   will
help shape Ontario’s political future. Students can participate in their schools through our Classroom Assembly program or by applying to become a member of the Students’ Assembly and attending our five day conference. | More...

We're working hard to create a remarkable program. If you've got ideas that you'd like to contribute, a pot of coffee you'd like to share, or you simply want to get your hands on more information about this project, then please get in touch.
